7:43 am	Nebraska Cornhuskers – The Tenure of Tom Osborne The Nebraska Cornhuskers have the distinction of being the most successful winning program in all of college football over the last fifty odd years. Over the course of their 119 year history as a football power, the Cornhuskers have managed to become one of only seven programs to achieve the 800 victory mark, with only three Division 1 teams winning more games. They have also won a total of five national titles, including three within the last 25 years. Remarkably, all three of those titles were achieved during the coaching tenure of Tom Osborne, the legendary Cornhusker coach who led the team from 1973 until his retirement in 1997. The philosophy of coaching Although Osborn is most famous for bringing the option offense to the University of Nebraska, fans of the school's football program know that the option was not the coach's first choice. In fact, Coach Osborne didn't implement the option offense until 1980, and was prompted to do that only after seeing how difficult it had been for his own team to confront Oklahoma's option attack throughout most of the 1970s. That ability to adjust his offensive and defensive strategies is a large part of why Osborne was able to achieve such consistent success throughout his long career with the Cornhuskers. For opposing teams, Nebraska's option attack would prove to be as difficult to defend as Osborne had found the Sooner's wishbone offense to be years before. Though much of that difficulty certainly had to do with the quality of the option quarterbacks Osborne was able to recruit, his ability to coach the entire offense and ensure that each role player was doing his job properly was without peer. Winning is easy For an entire quarter of a century of Osborne coaching, Nebraska enjoyed the type of national prominence most schools' fans would come to envy. With teams that won at least nine games in 25 consecutive seasons - a remarkable streak by any standard - and 13 Big Eight and Big Twelve Conference titles, Osborne amassed an impressive record of 255 all-time wins with only 49 losses and 3 ties. He also broke the record for the fastest coach to win 250 games, as his teams compiled a 60 victory and 3 losses run during his last five years at the coach's helm. In addition, throughout his tenure at Nebraska, there were only three weeks in which the Cornhuskers were not ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press poll. With undefeated teams in the 1994 and 1995 seasons - both of which resulted in consensus national championships, Osborne's Nebraska teams had earned the right to be called a true dynasty. The Cornhuskers' unpredictable and often unstoppable rushing offense, combined with a stellar defense that often received far less credit than it deserved, made them a potent force on the field that no team could afford to take for granted -just like their coach. Osborne remains with the University to this day, in his official capacity as athletic director. After not having won a national title for the majority of its history, the Hurricanes rose to national prominence in the 1980s when the '83-'84 team was awarded the national crown. Since that time, four other Miami teams have managed to compete for and win the national championship, making them one of the four top winning programs over the last thirty years. Success and resentment There's one thing that college football fans can all agree on: you either love the Hurricanes or you hate them. The Hurricanes are just one of those teams that elicit strong emotions. Part of this is due to their success on the field, and in the continuing success that many of their players have long after leaving the school. When you view the lineups of many NFL teams during a game, it is hard not to notice just how many of the players went to school at Miami! Then, of course, there is the fact that the Miami teams of the 1990s were often perceived as being too "showy" and full of themselves. In truth, that was almost certainly a false portrayal, particularly since those players went on to be outstanding team players in the professional teams with which they played. The truth is that many fans just found the hyper-successful Miami Hurricanes an easy team to hate - in much the same way that many basketball fans hate the Duke Blue Devils. The streaks Any conversation about the Miami home win streak should begin by pointing out that it was but one of many Miami victory streaks. The string of home victories extended from 1985 until 1994, and is perhaps the best evidence of just how loyal and excitable the home fans of any Miami game can be. That 58 game streak is impressive - but equally impressive is the 34-game streak compiled by the Hurricanes between the years 2000 and 2003. During that streak, Miami won not only all of their home games, but their away games as well. A decade before, Miami had compiled a streak of 29 such wins. Both streaks give evidence to just how powerful the Hurricanes had become, as few teams are able to go even one year without losing a game in their opponent's stadiums. The Hurricanes did it for several years in a row. Never out of the picture The University of Miami Hurricanes football teams have seen some difficulty in recent seasons, and the period since their last championship in 2002 has certainly not approached the glory that Miami teams provided for the previous two decades. To be certain, the Hurricanes have not advanced to the BCS Championship game since losing to Ohio State in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.
